Episode 17: Why Biodiversity Is Your Business with 3Bee

So, 3B is doing exciting work at the intersection of technology and nature. Can you explain what 3B is and what is its mission?

“Sure. 3B is the nature tech company that provide all-in-one solution for biodiversity monitoring and regeneration. Our mission is to connect and restore nature through our technologies and communities. As you may know, Federica, biodiversity is the variety of life on Earth, including plants, animals, and microbes, and it’s crucial in maintaining the ecosystem in health. Right now, biodiversity loss is one of the most urgent challenge globally. 70% of ecosystem is in danger, species are disappearing, pollinators are struggling in finding nectar resources. So, that’s our mission: understand what’s going on through technology and then try to restore every single possible spot by following scientific data. So for this reason, we support small and big companies or municipalities and urban parks in doing so, by defining with them a biodiversity strategy and then implementing restoration project on the field.”

Well, what you just said about biodiversity brings us to our second question. Because however it is very important, as you said, biodiversity loss often gets less attention than climate change, for example. Yet, it’s just as vital. Why do you believe it’s important for companies to talk about biodiversity and integrate it into their strategy?

“Yes, unfortunately you are right. And first of all, I would say to respond to the increasing regulation. Right now, companies need to be compliant to new standard and for doing that, they need a clear strategy and also transparent data to be able to communicate their impact to stakeholder and communities, avoiding green claim and greenwashing. I would also say opportunities. Sometimes I see companies focusing on the initial effort to be made or the investment to be made, and just few of them see the opportunities they may have thanks to the nature-positive transition we are facing. So they can have access to new market, they can improve brand reputation, they can attract new investor or new talent, they can have a retention of employees and, of course, also regulatory risk reduction. So, as you already said, is not just about environmental improvement, but it’s also social and economic one.”

Yeah, and that’s where NY [IxNatura] step in. But what are some concrete ways that businesses can collaborate with 3B and IxNatura to take action?

“3B has developed the first digital platform that enable the tracking of biodiversity Key Performance Indicator [KPI], ensuring alignment with global standards. So with us, companies can analyze biodiversity risk and site-specific impact through satellite data, then defining a baseline. After that, through our nature intelligence division, IxNatura, they can track the progress of the project with on-field technologies such as sensors or camera trap. And finally with 3B, they can implement on-site restoration project, or we can activate the first biodiversity credit in Europe thanks to our network of biodiversity oases.”

You explained that very well. So, now we would like to know what kind of concrete impact have your projects made on the ground, and are there any stories you can share?

“Sure. As today we are talking, we created more than 100 biodiversity oases in Italy. We are collaborating with almost 500 companies across 25 countries with a team of nearly 60 people. And we have also scientific collaboration with university or with entities such as ESA, the European Space Agency. And for me, 3B biodiversity oases represent the perfect fusion between nature and technology. These are spaces that enable the conservation and regeneration of biodiversity. They are habitat that serve as a refuges and food for pollinators. And in particular, these oases are created in a low biodiversity level place, and this allow us to make these areas resilient to change also. So companies can became guardian of these oases by implementing measurable biodiversity protection project while at the same time engaging their stakeholders.”
